Coaching Philosophy

My philosophy centers on empathy, resilience, and transforming player psychology. I focus heavily on shifting a player's mindset to value patience and tactical execution over flashy plays, coaxing them to understand the why behind every shot so they can develop both rock-solid fundamentals and a smarter game strategy.

What Christopher Offers

I bring high energy, clear instruction, and a welcoming environment to every session. My principle is to always teach students where they are, not where I am as a coach. I break down shot mechanics, tactics, and shot selection into simple, easy to digest concepts. If you have no sports background, I make everything approachable from scratch. If you do come from sports like tennis, badminton, or squash, I relate the concepts back to what your hands already know so learning feels effortless.

One thing every beginner should know

You don't need the most expensive paddle on the market, and please stop changing paddles every time a new one drops! Every time you switch, you reset your muscle memory and have to fine-tune your touch all over again. Stick to one paddle and focus on your game.
Also, you don't need to hit hard to win points—most lower-level rallies end in under five shots due to unforced errors.

Funniest coaching moment

I often set up my DJI Osmo camera on a tripod near the court to record video feedback for my students. Somehow, that camera instantly becomes a magnet for bad shots out of all the empty court space, my students manage to hit target practice right on my expensive camera every single time!

Most memorable student moment

Coach Carlo from Coebra connected me with a family traveling through Singapore who had two 5-year-old girls. The kids had a terrible prior experience with a coach back home who treated them like mini-adults rather than kids. Teaching children requires an entirely different approach because it's about engagement, play, and building trust, not rigid drills. Because of that past experience, the girls arrived completely resistant, refusing to put on sports clothes and striking a strict bargain with their parents: "We will try for 10 minutes, and that's it."
Standing at 5'1", I got right down on their eye level, dropped the formal instruction, and turned the court into a playground. Those 10 reluctant minutes turned into a full 60-minute session, and they only stopped because our court time ran out! Seeing them go from hating the sport to bouncing around with joy and begging to keep playing was incredible. The parents were amazed and told me they wished I could come back to Manila with them just to coach the girls. Realizing that a single session could completely rewrite a child's mindset about sports and potentially change their relationship with active living forever is the biggest compliment I could ever receive as a coach.
